Developments in adhesive dentistry since the 1950s have revolutionised conservative dentistry. Previous philosophies of cavity preparation emphasised the need to provide mechanical retention, often at the expense of removing further sound tooth structure, in order to effectively retain non-adhesive restorative materials.
